How much does a website for a small business cost (and why)
· Juan Carlos Lacruz
Let's talk plainly about pricing: what you pay when you commission a website, what makes a project pricier or cheaper, and how to tell if an offer is reasonable.
"How much does a website cost?" is like asking how much a car costs: it depends. But I can give you the map so you understand what you pay and make a good decision.
What you are really paying for
- Design. So your website doesn't look like just another template and reflects your brand.
- Development. So it loads fast, works on mobile and shows up well on Google.
- Content. Text and images that convince, not filler.
- Maintenance. So it keeps working and stays secure over time.
What makes the project pricier (or cheaper)
A three- or four-page presentation site doesn't cost the same as an online store with a payment gateway and catalog. What moves the price most is functional complexity and the amount of custom content. Reusing a solid base and having your text clear from the start makes it much cheaper.
Beware of "free"
Free or 5-minute websites exist, but you pay another way: with someone else's ads, a domain that isn't fully yours, templates identical to thousands of businesses, and zero help when something breaks.
How to tell if a quote is fair
A good quote tells you what's included, what isn't, and what happens after launch. If it's explained clearly and without jargon, you're on the right track. Want a figure for your specific case? Tell me about your project and I'll ground it for you.
